What is prostate cancer?

Going by news reports, prostate cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers among urban men in India. Reportedly, every year, we see over 1.4 million new cases of it from the world over. But what is it exactly? Well, there's a prostate gland in the body that is located below the bladder. It is small in size and is responsible for producing seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. When cancer develops in this gland, it is called prostate cancer.

Symptoms of prostate cancer

It is said that in the initials stages of this cancer, the symptoms are not too noticeable. It is only when it progresses to an advanced stage that one starts seeing the signs.

Frequent urination, especially at night

Weak or interrupted flow of urine

Blood in urine or semen

Painful urination or ejaculation

Persistent pain in the back, hips of pelvis region

Causes of prostate cancer

Dr Venkata Boppana B, Consultant in Urology and Uro-Oncology at Narayana Health, Kolkata, had told Moneycontrol that genetics play a huge role. "Genetics play a strong role. If your father or brother had prostate cancer, it’s essential to get screened after 50, or even earlier."

He also blamed poor lifestyle and dietary choices behind the spike in prostate cancer cases. He warned that sedentary lifestyle, high stress, junk food and processed food consumption - all of these choices take a toll on one's health.

Early detection of prostate cancer is key

“Earlier detection has improved outcomes and survival rates significantly. Men must prioritise healthy eating, staying active, and regular screenings. Cutting down on processed foods, and alcohol can lower risk, while including more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supports prostate health. Managing stress and maintaining a healthy weight are also key steps in prevention,” Dr Boppana had told Moneycontrol.

Tips to prevent prostate cancer

Proper diet

Your food choices are crucial for your good health, after all, you are what you eat. Opting for a diet abundant in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Compounds like lycopene in tomatoes and isoflavones in soy are thought to offer protective benefits.

Get moving

A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity can lead to weight gain. Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight and hormone balance, lowering the risk of cancer.

Abstain from certain foods

High consumption of red meat and high-fat dairy products has been linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer. Opt for lean proteins and plant-based alternatives.

Ditch the habit

Smoking is strongly associated with various cancers, including prostate cancer. Quitting smoking can substantially decrease your risk of developing prostate cancer, as well as other serious health conditions.

Early detection saves lives

Regular screening is important, particularly for men over 50 or those with a family history of prostate cancer. Timely screenings can detect prostate cancer in its early stages when treatment is most effective, potentially saving lives.
