ST. Louis (TND) — A Missouri teen, Kaylee Gaines, severely beaten in a fight at the beginning of this month, is speaking out against comments made by members of the accused attacker's family.

After a video went viral in March showing Gaines being assaulted by another girl, she gained national attention. The video depicts Gaines being blindsided and then repeatedly punched in the head by the other girl.

Towards the end of the video, Gaines is seen being dragged to the ground. She was later taken to a nearby medical center, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit and underwent surgery to repair a fractured skull and internal bleeding in the brain.

In a statement released late Friday, Gaines' parents' attorney said that while they are now "capable of limited verbal communication," Gaines is still unable to walk without assistance from hospital staff. The attorney, Brian Kaemmerer, added that Gaines has started speech therapy.

Kaemmerer mentioned in the statement that Gaines' family, of the accused assailant, is reportedly distancing themselves. The family alleges that they have attempted to "downplay" the actions of the 15-year-old perpetrator, stating that she was "among the singing group" and "played a non-speaking role."
