German Game Developer Manuel Otto Dies at 30 During Twitch Livestream

According to the streaming platform Twitch and his colleagues, German video game designer and influencer Manuel Otto died by suicide while livestreaming on Twitch. He was 30 years old.

Otto was just 14 years old and still in high school when he created his most famous game, “Stick Run.” The free Facebook game, which was later released as an app for Android and Apple devices, was played by millions of people.

According to German newspaper Bild, authorities discovered his body on Tuesday after responding to a report of a fire in the attic of a house in the village of Breitbrunn am Chiemsee in Bavaria.

His colleagues confirmed his death on social media.

“With heavy hearts, we confirm and announce the death of our creator, developer, and colleague, Stick Runner, Marc-Manuel Alexander Otto,” the Stick Run team posted on Facebook on Wednesday. An earlier post from the team stated that Otto “appeared to have died by suicide” during a livestream.

Videos of the livestream, which were later posted online, showed Otto setting himself on fire.

Meanwhile, a Twitch spokesperson said in an emailed statement that the platform had “quickly removed the channel and the video on demand (VOD) to prevent others from viewing it.”

“What happened is horrific, and the mental health and well-being of our community are extremely important to us,” the spokesperson said. “We encourage anyone experiencing mental health difficulties to seek support.”

Otto launched his own game on Facebook in 2010. In the game, players control a stick figure running through a series of obstacles.

According to Dexerto, a digital media company covering the video game industry, more than 43 million people worldwide have played “Stick Run” since its launch.

“Thank you for being part of our childhood, Manuel,” the Stick Run team wrote in its post. “You will never be forgotten.”
