The individuals responsible for the murder of a 15-year-old girl in Sonoita appeared to have recorded the crime as if it were a game. The video was presented as evidence before the judge, yet the sentences handed down satisfied no one.
San Luis Río Colorado — Layla was 15 years old when two girls from the town of Sonoita deceived her, tied her to a chair, blindfolded her, and strangled her to death, recording the entire incident on video.

She would have turned 16 on April 6. Meanwhile, her mother, Carmen Angélica Becerra Valencia, has been left to face this battle alone—a struggle that began on September 26, 2025, the day her daughter was taken from her. According to her, the justice system has chosen to ignore this fight.
The video exists, and its scenes are disturbing. It was sent anonymously to the family and presented as evidence in court. The footage shows Layla sitting blindfolded, believing she is about to be surprised. She laughs and asks who she is going to meet.
The attackers follow along, signaling to each other what to do, and place a rope around her neck. By the time they remove the blindfold, it is already too late.
The strangulation lasts for about a minute, during which they scold and insult her over “unfinished business.” Suddenly, Layla stops moving. The video cuts off.
According to Carmen Becerra, the footage says it all. “No further evidence was needed; everything is there,” she said. She also noted that the video exposed inconsistencies in the statements later made by those involved, who even denied responsibility on social media.

Among the Girls
Those responsible for the crime are Brittany Michelle, who was 15 at the time of the offense, and Monserrat, who was 13.
Judge Fernando Crimpe Félix, a specialist in the juvenile criminal justice system, issued the following rulings:
Brittany Michelle was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison, a sentence she is still serving.
Monserrat was released after 11 months under supervision and is currently living freely in Puerto Peñasco.
The court-ordered compensation amounted to 5,677 pesos. Carmen Becerra refused to accept the money, considering it insulting. Funeral expenses exceeded 30,000 pesos.
“It’s not about the money, but this is an extreme injustice,” she said. “It is not fair that they took her life so cruelly and received no real punishment.”
Premeditated Act
According to the mother, the crime was not an impulsive act. Tensions between the teenagers, including direct threats, had been escalating for weeks.
The following day, Monserrat lured Layla out of her home under the pretense of giving her a surprise. She took her to Brittany’s house, where Layla was killed in the manner shown in the video. Her body was buried in a house in a small rural area known as Flor del Desierto.
For her mother, the ruling is not only insufficient but also sends a dangerous message. “Where are my rights? Where is justice for my daughter?” she asked. She also stated that she was prevented from attending key hearings during the case proceedings, which she believes violated her rights as an indirect victim.

More Possible Accomplices
Becerra Valencia also claims that more people may have been involved in the crime and insists that this aspect was not thoroughly investigated.
Given the situation, she is not ruling out appealing to overturn the sentence or at least exposing what she believes to be a structural flaw in the juvenile justice system.
“I will not rest until justice is served—not only for my daughter, but to prevent this from happening to other families,” she warned.
The case has begun to raise concern within the communities of San Luis Río Colorado and Sonoita, highlighting potential shortcomings in the protection of minor victims and the proportionality of punishment within Sonora’s juvenile justice system.
This Sunday, Layla would have turned 16.
