Man Killed by U.S. Border Patrol Officer in Minneapolis Was an ICU Nurse, Family Says

Minneapolis (AP) — Family members said the man who was killed Saturday in Minneapolis by a U.S. Border Patrol officer was an intensive care unit nurse at a VA hospital who cared deeply about people and was disturbed by President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown in his city.

Thirty-seven-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti was an avid outdoorsman who loved going on adventures with his beloved Catahoula leopard dog, Jules, who had recently died. He worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and had participated in protests following the Jan. 7 killing of Rene Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.

“He cared deeply about people and was very upset about what ICE is doing in Minneapolis and across the United States, just like millions of other people,” Alex’s father, Michael Pretti, said. “He thought it was horrific — you know, abducting children, just grabbing people off the streets. He cared about those people, and he knew it was wrong, so he protested.”

Pretti was a U.S. citizen, born in Illinois. Like Good, court records show he had no criminal record, and his family said that aside from a handful of traffic tickets, he had never had any interaction with law enforcement.

“We had this conversation with him two weeks ago — you know, go ahead and protest, but don’t get involved, basically don’t do anything stupid,” Michael Pretti said. “And he said he knew that. He knew.”

The Department of Homeland Security said the man was shot after “approaching” Border Patrol agents while armed with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Officials did not clarify whether Pretti pointed the gun. In eyewitness videos taken immediately after the shooting, Pretti is seen holding a phone in his hand, and no video shows him visibly holding a weapon.

Family members said Pretti owned a handgun and had a permit to carry a concealed handgun in Minnesota. They said they had never seen him carry it.

Alex Pretti’s Family Struggles to Learn What Happened

The family first learned about the shooting when an Associated Press reporter called them. After watching the video, they said the person who was killed appeared to be their son. They then tried to contact Minnesota officials.

“I’m not getting any information from anyone,” Michael Pretti said Saturday. “Police tell us to call Border Patrol, Border Patrol is closed, hospitals won’t answer any questions.”

Eventually, the parents contacted the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, who confirmed that there was a body matching their son’s name and description.

As of Saturday evening, the family said they had still not received any information from federal law enforcement agencies about their son’s death.

After watching videos of top Trump administration officials labeling their son a “domestic terrorist” who attacked the officers who shot him, the family released a written statement describing themselves as heartbroken and outraged.

“The disturbing lies being told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting,” the statement said. They added that videos show Alex Pretti was not holding a gun when federal agents confronted him, but was holding his phone in one hand and using the other to protect a woman who had been pepper-sprayed.

“Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good person,” they said.

Background and Life

Alex Pretti grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he played football and baseball and ran track for Preble High School. He was a Boy Scout and sang in the Green Bay Boy Choir.

After graduating, he attended the University of Minnesota and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, society, and environment in 2011, according to his family. He worked as a research scientist before returning to school to become a registered nurse.

Pretti Had Protested Before

Pretti’s former wife, who spoke to the AP but later asked not to be named, said she was not surprised that he was involved in protests against Trump’s immigration policies. She said she had not spoken to him since their divorce more than two years earlier, after she moved to another state.

She said he was a Democratic voter and had participated in street protests following the 2020 death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, which occurred not far from their former neighborhood. She described him as someone who might yell at law enforcement during protests but said she never saw him physically engage in violence.

She said Pretti received a concealed-carry permit nearly three years ago and had at least one semi-automatic handgun when they separated.

“He Had a Great Heart”

Pretti lived alone in a four-unit condominium building about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from where he was shot. Neighbors described him as quiet and warm-hearted.

“He was an amazing person,” said Sue Gitter, who lived in the unit below Pretti and said he moved into the building about three years ago. “He had a great heart.”

If something suspicious happened nearby or if neighbors feared a gas leak in the building, he would jump in to help.

Pretti worked long hours as a nurse and lived alone, but neighbors said he was not lonely and occasionally spent time with friends.

They knew he owned guns — he sometimes took a rifle to a shooting range — but were surprised by the idea that he might carry a pistol on the street.

“I never thought of him as someone who carried a gun,” Gitter said.

Love for the Outdoors

Pretti also loved the outdoors. A competitive cyclist who spent a lot of money maintaining his new Audi, he was deeply attached to his dog, who had died about a year earlier.

His parents said their last conversation with their son was just days before his death. They discussed repairs to his garage door. The worker was a Latino man, and they said Alex tipped him $100 because of what was happening in Minneapolis.

Pretti’s mother said her son deeply cared about the direction the country was heading, especially the Trump administration’s rollback of environmental regulations.

“People throwing trash on the land really upset him,” Susan Pretti said. “He was an outdoorsman. He took his dog everywhere. You know, he loved this country — but he hated what people were doing to it.”
