Yesterday was the Jewish holiday, the first evening of Hanukkah. Gunmen were seen near the Chanukah by the Sea event, where Sydney’s Jewish community had gathered to celebrate.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the attack was “a vile antisemitic act of terrorism that has struck at the heart of our nation” and that Jewish Australians were targeted on a day of joy and religious celebration.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said at a press conference around 10 pm that at least 12 people had been killed, including one gunman. At least 29 injured people were taken to hospital. Lanyon declared the attack a terrorist incident and said several improvised explosive devices were found in a vehicle on Campbell Parade linked to the deceased offender.
