Massive Earthquake Shakes Kamchatka
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a shallow earthquake capable of generating waves up to 13 feet (4 meters) along Russia's eastern coast. Authorities in Russia, Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. West Coast have all issued tsunami warnings and evacuation notices.
Governor Vladimir Solodov of Kamchatka called it “the most powerful quake in decades.” He confirmed that one kindergarten suffered structural damage, but so far, no injuries or deaths have been reported.
Remote Areas Among the Hardest Hit
One of the severely affected areas is the remote town of Severo-Kurilsk on a small island south of Kamchatka. Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko has ordered the evacuation of residents in that region as a preventive measure.
Japan Issues High Tsunami Alert
The Japan Meteorological Agency raised its tsunami alert, warning of waves over 10 feet (3 meters) potentially striking large parts of Japan’s eastern coastline between 01:00 and 02:30 GMT. NHK, Japan’s national broadcaster, reported that several coastal towns have already been told to evacuate.
Fukushima Nuclear Workers Evacuated
As a precaution, all staff at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant — the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster — have been evacuated. A TEPCO spokesperson confirmed to AFP, “We have evacuated all workers and staff.” No irregularities have been found at the facility.
