Brazilian Tourist Juliana Marins Missing After Fall Near Mount Rinjani Crater

Lombok, Indonesia — Indonesian rescuers are searching for a Brazilian tourist who fell near the crater of the active volcano Mount Rinjani while hiking.

The tourist has been identified as 26-year-old Juliana Marins by Brazilian media and her family. She went missing around 6:30 a.m. local time on Saturday (Friday 23:30 GMT) while hiking with a group.

According to Brazilian authorities, she fell “from a hill surrounding the path next to the volcano’s crater.”

Search and rescue efforts have so far been unsuccessful due to the area’s rough terrain and dense fog, said Indonesian officials.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Mount Rinjani Park officials reported that on Saturday, rescuers heard Juliana crying for help. She was reportedly alive and responsive at that time, though she seemed to be in shock.

Drone footage and video clips shared online and by Brazilian news outlets showed Juliana sitting and moving on gray ground far below the trail.

Later that day, rescuers descended 300 meters (984 feet) but couldn’t locate her. She didn’t respond when they called out her name. By Sunday morning, drone footage confirmed she was no longer in the same spot.

Officials said thick fog is hampering visibility and affecting the performance of thermal drones.

Family Raises Concerns

Juliana was seen again on Monday, though it appeared she had fallen further. Her family stated that the rescue mission had to pause due to extreme weather conditions.

“Rescuers went down 250 meters but had 350 more meters to reach Juliana and had to retreat,” the family posted on social media.

They also criticized the decision to keep the park open, saying, “Tourists are still hiking the same trail while Juliana needs help! We don’t know her condition! She’s had no water, food, or warm clothes for three days!”

Authorities Respond

Setyawaan Pudyatmoko from Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry told the BBC that officials assessed the route would not affect the evacuation, so it was not closed.

“Hikers were warned and advised to avoid the evacuation zone,” he said, adding that many trekkers had already booked trips and traveled long distances to reach Mount Rinjani.

Dangerous History of Mount Rinjani

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry confirmed they are in contact with Indonesian authorities and have dispatched two embassy staff members to monitor the situation.

In a Globo TV interview, two members of Juliana’s hiking group described the trek as extremely challenging due to cold temperatures and poor visibility before sunrise. One member noted, “It was really cold and difficult. The trail was slippery and dimly lit with just a lantern.”

Mount Rinjani, standing at over 3,700 meters, is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano and a popular destination for hikers worldwide.

Previous incidents have occurred here: a Portuguese man died in 2022 after falling from the summit, and a Malaysian hiker died earlier this year after a similar fall.

Rescue Mission Continues

As of Tuesday, Juliana Marins’ family confirmed that the rescue operation had resumed. Authorities and rescuers are hopeful but continue to battle tough conditions as they search for her.
