Mexico City: A young Mexican social media influencer, known for her videos about beauty and makeup, was shamelessly shot and killed during a TikTok livestream, an incident that has shocked a country already grappling with high levels of gender-based violence.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, the prosecutor of Jalisco state said the death of 23-year-old Valeria Marquez is being investigated under the femicide protocol — the killing of women or girls because of their gender.
According to Mexican authorities, femicide may involve degrading violence, sexual assault, a relationship with the perpetrator, or exposing the victim’s body in public spaces.

The statement said that on Tuesday, in the city of Zapopan, a man entered the beauty salon where Marquez worked and shot her dead. The prosecutor’s office has not disclosed the name of the suspect.
Just seconds before the incident, Marquez was seen sitting at a table during her TikTok livestream, holding a toy. She was heard saying, “They’re coming,” just before a voice from the background asked, “Hey, Val?”
“Yes,” Marquez replied, right before the livestream went silent.

Moments later, she was shot and killed. A person was seen picking up her phone, with part of their face briefly appearing on the livestream before it ended.
Marquez, who had around 200,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok, had previously mentioned during a livestream that when she wasn’t at the salon, someone had come to give her an “expensive gift.” Looking visibly worried, she had said that she did not plan to wait for that person to return.

According to data consulting firm TResearch, Jalisco ranks sixth among Mexico’s 32 states for homicides, including Mexico City. Since President Claudia Sheinbaum’s term began in October 2024, 906 homicides have been recorded there.
